Privacy Policy

The short version: right now this site collects one thing, an email address, so we can tell you when the service opens. We don't sell it and we don't send newsletters.

Where we are today. Paperwork and Peace is not open yet. This website is a waiting list. The planning tools, the checklist, and the document storage described on our home page are still being built, and none of them are collecting your information yet. When they open, this policy will be updated before you can enter anything into them, and we will email everyone on the list when that happens.

Who we are

Paperwork and Peace is a small business based in Illinois. You can reach us any time at [email protected]. We are the party responsible for the information described below.

What we collect right now

  • Your email address, when you type it into the form on this site. That's the only thing we ask you for.
  • Which page you signed up from — the planning page or the page about settling an estate — so we know which part of the service to tell you about first.
  • Basic visit information that nearly every website records: the pages you opened, roughly when, the kind of device and browser you used, and a general location based on your network address. This is not tied to your name.

We do not ask for your legal name, your address, your phone number, your date of birth, your Social Security number, or anything about your family or your finances. Please don't send those to us by email either — there is no reason to, and we would rather not hold them.

Advertising and the Meta pixel

We advertise on Facebook and Instagram. This site includes a piece of Meta's tracking code, called a pixel, which tells Meta that someone arrived here from one of our ads and whether they joined the waiting list. Meta may connect that to your Facebook or Instagram account and may use it to show you our ads again, and we use it to work out which of our ads are worth paying for.

If you join the waiting list, your email address is also sent to Meta as part of this, scrambled first into a code that can't be read back (what's called hashing). Meta uses it to work out whether you are the same person who clicked our ad. Meta does not receive your address in a readable form, and we don't send them anything else about you.

If you would rather not be included in that, you can turn off off-site activity tracking in your Facebook settings, or use a browser that blocks it. You can still join the waiting list either way — nothing on this site depends on it.

We do not run any other advertising or analytics trackers on this site.

Who else can see your email address

Only the companies we rely on to run the site, and only for that purpose. Today that means the company that hosts this website, the service that receives the signup form and passes it to our inbox, our email provider, and Meta in the scrambled form described above. They are not allowed to use your address for their own purposes.

We do not sell your information, and we do not share it with funeral homes, attorneys, insurers, or any other business. If that ever changes, it will only be with your explicit permission, asked for separately.

We would hand over information if a court or a law required it, and we'd tell you unless we were legally barred from doing so.

How long we keep it

Until the service opens and we've written to you, or until you ask us to delete it, whichever comes first. If we haven't launched within two years, we'll delete the whole list and start over rather than sit on old addresses.

How it's protected

This site is served over an encrypted connection, and the services holding your address require passwords and two-factor sign-in. We keep the list small and we don't copy it anywhere it doesn't need to be.

We're being straight with you: no website can promise it will never be broken into. What we can promise is that there is very little here to take, and that if something did happen to the list, we would email everyone on it.

Having your information removed

Email [email protected] and ask. You don't need a reason and you don't need to explain. We'll delete your address and confirm within seven days. You can also ask us for a copy of what we hold, or ask us to correct it.

Depending on where you live, you may have further rights over your information under your state's or country's law. We'll honor those requests from anyone who asks, wherever you are, rather than making you prove you qualify.

Children

This service is for adults. We don't knowingly collect anything from anyone under 18, and if we learn that we have, we'll delete it.

Changes to this policy

If we change it, we'll change the date at the top. If the change actually affects you — new information collected, or a new company involved in handling it — we'll email the list rather than quietly editing this page.
